People lose teeth because of various reasons. Accidents are the common cause of teeth loss, but dental diseases also cause this problem. Nowadays, losing a tooth shouldn’t scare anyone. There are several treatment options that can fix this problem. Dental bridges Procedures are one of the many available treatment options for missing teeth.
Dental bridges are an effective treatment option. Our dentist in Sunnyvale can recommend this treatment option if you lose a tooth. It is important to have information about the different types of dental bridges. This will help you get the right type of dental bridge for your missing teeth. Read on to find more about this treatment option.
The dentist will conduct a dental exam to determine if you qualify for this treatment option. If your gums are not healthy enough for this treatment option, the dentist may recommend gum treatment. If you qualify, the dentist will numb the area and work on the adjacent teeth.
Our dentist will file the adjacent teeth so that they can accommodate the crowns. The dentist will then mold your bridge based on your teeth. At times we give patients a temporary bridge as they wait for the permanent one. We will take out the temporary bridge once the permanent one is ready.
Although this is a common treatment option, not everyone understands what it involves. A dental bridge is made up of two crowns that are specially fitted to rest on the abutment. Dental bridges can have more than two fitted crowns depending on the number of missing teeth.
We have been using this treatment option for years now in restorative dentistry. This treatment option will bring back your lost smile and restore your confidence. Dental bridges can either be fixed or removable. Fixed ones are permanent and can’t be removed while removable ones can be removed.
This treatment option comes in different types. Not all types can work for you. Talking to your dentist about this is important. The dentist will help you choose an option that will work for you. These are the common types of this treatment option.
1. Traditional Bridges
This is a common solution for patients missing one or more teeth. Traditional bridges can consist of one or several pontics. The number of pontics on the bridge will depend on how many teeth a patient is missing. We use this type of dental bridge when patients have natural teeth on either side of the gap.
Besides being a common treatment option, traditional bridges have their downsides. Our dentists will have to remove the enamel of your adjacent teeth to make room for the crowns. You, however, shouldn’t worry as we will protect your teeth with crowns
2. Cantilever Bridges
Cantilever bridges are an alternative to traditional bridges. In cantilever bridges, the abutment only supports the pontic on one side. This option will work for you even if you only have one tooth next to the gap. Here our dentist will also have to remove the enamel from the adjacent teeth before fixing the bridge.
We, at times, use this option as a layer. However, using cantilever bridges as a layer can loosen crowns. Talking to your dentist is what we recommend if you are considering this option.
3. Maryland Bridges
This is a conservative option when compared to traditional bridges. In Maryland bridges, a porcelain or metal framework holds the pontics in place. The dentist will bond the framework to the natural teeth adjacent to your missing tooth. Filing is not necessary with this option as the bridge is not held by crowns.
The downside with Maryland bridges is that they are not as strong as other options. If used in places with frequent biting and chewing, they may not last.
4. Implant Supported Bridges
Just as the name suggests, these bridges are supported by dental implants. We use them for patients missing more than one teeth. Each missing tooth will have an implant to support the bridge. These bridges are comfortable and will feel just like natural teeth.
Caring for your bridge isn’t hard. You just need to keep brushing and flossing your teeth on a regular basis. You should also visit the dentist in Sunnyvale for a checkup.
